What to Do After Arriving in Korea with Your Bicycle (Steps 5–7)
Welcome back! 🤗
Are you getting ready for a cross-country cycling adventure in Korea?
In the first post, we covered collecting your bicycle, getting a SIM or eSIM, preparing Korean won and buying a T-money card after arriving at Incheon Airport.
👉 Part 1: What to Do After Arriving in Korea with Your Bicycle (Steps 1–4)
Now let’s continue with Steps 5–7: deciding where to assemble your bicycle, dealing with the box and checking your bike before you ride. 🚲
Before you start riding in Korea
5. Make an important decision
6. Deal with your bicycle box
7. Check your bicycle
5. Make an important decision
Assemble at the airport or at your accommodation?
Once you have collected your bicycle and luggage, there is a decision to make:
“Should I assemble my bike at the airport, or keep it boxed until I reach my accommodation?”
There is no single right answer. Think about your arrival time, how you feel after the flight, the tools you have brought and how you will get to your accommodation.
Option A 🚲 Assemble your bicycle at the airport
This may be an option if you are comfortable assembling your bike and have the necessary tools. First, ask the airport information desk where assembly is permitted, and make sure you do not obstruct other passengers.
Carefully refit the parts you removed for packing:
- Install the front wheel.
- Refit the handlebar and check its alignment.
- Install the pedals.
- Check saddle height and secure the saddle.
- Check tyre pressure.
- Check the brakes and shifting.
- Secure your panniers and other luggage.
Follow the bicycle and component manufacturers’ instructions, including their specified tightening torques. Make sure you identify the left and right pedals correctly; if a pedal does not thread in smoothly, do not force it.
✔️ Walk your bicycle inside the terminal.
Incheon Airport’s official visitor guidance prohibits riding bicycles inside passenger terminals.

Also, do not assume that assembling your bike at the airport means you can immediately ride away from it. Plan your route and transport to your accommodation or the starting point of your cycling trip first. Bicycle carriage rules on trains and buses may depend on the operator and whether the bike is packed, so check before travelling.
Option B 📦 Travel with the bike boxed, then assemble it at your accommodation
If you are tired after a long flight or arrive in the evening, heading to your accommodation and resting first can be a good choice.
Arrive → Hotel → Rest → Assemble → Check → Ride
Before booking, check two things:
- Your transfer: provide the box’s length, width and height, the number of passengers and details of your other luggage. Confirm that everything will fit.
- Your accommodation: ask whether you can bring in a large bicycle box, where you can assemble the bike and where you can store it afterwards.
You do not have to start riding on your first day. Getting some rest, then assembling and checking your bike in daylight, can be a great way to begin your trip. 😊
6. Deal with your bicycle box
What should you do with your bike box?
After assembly, you will have a large box and packing materials left over. Before deciding what to do with them, think about how you will pack your bicycle for the journey home.

① If you want to dispose of the box
Ask airport or accommodation staff where and how to dispose of the box and packing materials. Do not simply leave a large box beside a rubbish bin or in a walkway.
Check inside the box and between the padding one last time. Small bolts, tools, axles or pedals may still be tucked away. Remove baggage labels containing your name and contact details, too.
② If you want to keep it for your return flight
If you will stay at the same accommodation when arriving and before departing, ask whether they can store your box. You can also enquire with a storage service.
- Can they accept a box of this size?
- Can they keep it for your whole trip?
- What are the fees and collection hours?
- Do they also accept hard cases or bicycle travel bags?
Availability and fees vary. Rather than assuming storage is free or available at the airport, send the dimensions and dates in advance and get confirmation.
③ If you plan to get a new box before flying home
Contact a bicycle shop in your departure city ahead of time and ask about box availability, dimensions and cost. Shops do not always have spare boxes, so leaving this until just before your flight can make your schedule stressful.
Ask whether you also need padding and tape, and whether the shop offers a paid packing service. Make sure the final package meets your airline’s bicycle baggage size and weight requirements.
💡 Decide how you will pack your bike for the trip home before throwing away the box!
7. Check your bicycle
Bike safety check before your first ride
Once the bike is assembled, take a moment to check it before heading out on a long ride. Even if everything looks fine, transport and reassembly may have affected wheel security or shifting.
✔️ Pre-ride checklist
- Tyres: look for cuts or damage. Set pressure within the limits specified by the tyre and rim manufacturers, taking your luggage weight and riding conditions into account.
- Wheels and axles: check that both wheels are correctly seated and that quick releases or thru-axles are secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Spin the wheels and look for excessive wobble or rubbing.
- Brakes: test the front and rear brakes separately while slowly walking the bike. If lever feel is unusual or braking is weak, have the problem checked before setting off.
- Handlebar, saddle and pedals: check alignment, height and secure attachment. Use the specified tightening torques rather than simply tightening everything as hard as possible.
- Gears and chain: turn the pedals and check that shifting is smooth. If the chain skips or tries to shift towards the spokes, stop and have the bike checked.
- Luggage: make sure panniers and bags are secure, with no loose straps near the wheels or chain.
- Lights and batteries: check your front and rear lights, and charge your phone, GPS and power bank.
If the bike suffered an impact in transit, pay particular attention to the derailleur and derailleur hanger. Not every shifting problem comes from the hanger, but visible bending or interference with the wheel calls for a bicycle shop’s help rather than trying to force it straight yourself.

Finally, take a short test ride with your luggage fitted in a safe area away from traffic and pedestrians. Check that starting, stopping and shifting all feel normal before beginning your journey.
That covers where to assemble your bike, what to do with the box and how to check the bike before departure.
In the next instalment, we will cover 8. GPX files and maps, 9. The cycling certification passport, and 10. Starting your cross-country ride. 😊
